Lindane is an insecticide that has been registered for commercial and home use. It is the active ingredient in the majority of prescribed shampoos used for the elimination of head lice.
This toxin is slightly soluble in water and very persistent in soils. Even acute exposure to living creatures, especially mammals, has been proven to results in neurological and behavioral effects. Some of the most common effects occur in the liver and kidneys and has been shown to cause tumors and precancerous liver lesions in short term studies.
Alachlor is another chemical commonly found in drinking water. This is a herbicide used for the control of grasses and weeds in crops, primarily in corn, sorghum, and soybeans. Alachlor is the second most widely used herbicide in the United States with particularly heavy use in corn and soybeans.
Potential short term health effects of Alachlor are slight skin and eye irritation. Potential long term health effects are more serious and include damage to the liver, kidney, spleen, lining of the nose and eyelids, and cancer.
The final chemical that most people are unaware of is called Atrazine and is a herbicide in controlling weeds such as pigweed, cocklebur, and velvetlead as well as certain grass weeds in corn and sorghum supplies. Although this toxin is very well absorbed into corn and sorghum itself and metabolized by the plants thereby detoxifying it, this herbicide still seeps into water supplies and ground water. In Pennsylvania alone, Atrazine is regularly applied to over 90% of the corn crop.
Potential health effects that Atrazine has been found to cause include congestion of the heart, lungs, and kidneys. Hypotension, antidiuresis, muscle spasms, weight loss, and adrenal degeneration are just a few. Other Chronic health effects include cardiovascular damage, retinal and muscle degeneration, and mammary tumors.
When looking at whole house water filters, make sure that whatever filtration system you chooses is able to at also deal with these contaminants in your water supply as well as the most common and well known toxins.
